DagoPatlan,

You have a couple of options. The server can play a file from an offset, to a duration, so that you can trim the start or end of a file. So that does not match your need exactly. You could work around that by creating one event that started from the start of the file, played to the start of the black, and then stopped. Then, a second event that started from the end of the black and played to the end. This is because events can have unique offsets and duration, different from those stored with the content file itself.

Another option would be to create switch events, if you are using a matrix switch, that start at the start of the black and end at the end of the black, if you do truly want to insert other video over that time. You would need to no chronologically when the black will start though, which would be the scheduled start of the file + the duration until the black starts.

If you want to remove the black, or place some other content over it, another option would be a pre-broadcast production step, using a NLE or other tool, to either remove the black or place other content over it. Several editors available today are capable of doing "smart trims" on MPEG-2 video, where they trim based on GOP seams and thus do not need to re-render the whole video (making the process much faster). One such program we would recommend is http://www.womble.com/, and technical support can recommend a few others if you reach out to them directly.

We just got our B3000 and are preparing to turn it on and fill it with content. I've run into a question I can't seem to be able to answer with the manual.

I have about 10 years with of existing content on DVD that contains two minute holes with black in the middle of the show. These black holes were for breaks that were inserted into the show. This allowed for deadrolling of the program so that the operator didn't have to pause and restart the DVD during the switch.

These black holes are not chaptered so how do we "mark up" the media so that the we can run breaks within programs so that we have a seamless broadcast wihtout broadcasting black?

Douglas,

Sorry to hear you are not a fan of the playlist continuity feature. It definitely has some limits, but just to make sure we are on the same page, let me outline a few features it does have, that maybe are not obvious:
1. You can import still images via the import/media hot folder, so no need to necessarily import them one at a time
2. The playlist editor does support drag and drop re-ordering of the playlist
3. You can play background music behind the playlist by using the backgroundAudio folder and mp3 files

If you are looking for some functions that it doesn't provide today (the ones that come to mind is direct import of a PPT, and transition effects), there are some 3rd party programs that render a PPT into an MPEG file. We have a number of customers use that to make a new loop file once a week or once every few days, and set that file as file continuity.

Consolidation is always a good thing - less pieces that can fail, or for you to worry about. That said, I actually like the idea of older PCs filling in roles like this. Its really not that different from buying purpose-built, low-powered PCs today to serve similar roles, except it saves you the price tag of a new PC, even a low powered one!

Hope that helps a little,

Chris,

A couple of things - the servers are really intended to run as "appliances", you should not need to interact with the linux os, and indeed in our more recent versions, we use special compiled versions of the linux kernels (not stock red hat any longer).

The prompt disappears when looking at the console because of the software involved in the overlay engine. This is expected behavior. And again, because our software (hopefully) provides you everything you need to manage the server itself (set ip addresses, dns servers, etc.), you shouldn't need the prompt anyway.

And yes, if you did re-install red hat or any other os onto the system you would wipe out all our software and configuration.

Of course, any of a number of problems could be causing the server to act-up. I would say your best course of action is to open a support case via support@telvue.com to let a technical support technician check it out. Especially if the server has run for a number of years, some routine maintenance could be required or it could be something specific.

Hope that helps,

Our Princeton B1100 broadcasting server was working for the past couple of years, but all of a sudden it is acting up. It is running RedHat 2.4.26, which I know is very outdated, but has worked fine for us. The server will start up and go through the system check(I guess) then will proceed to a screen that says, I believe, B1100 login:. It's hard to make out the whole screen because it quickly disappears and goes to a black screen, but it does look like a text based login.

I've tried Ctrl+Alt+F1 like some people have suggested, but it does nothing.

Is there anyway to reinstall RedHat or will reinstalling wipe out necessary software?

BTW no RedHat cd was provided when server was purchased from Princeton.

Thanks,

Hey folks -

Fairly new user to the TelVue world, have been working with our B3400 since about January of this year. Gone through a lot of iterations, tried out a lot of functionality. Happy for the most part, but looking to simplify my life. Here goes:

We use a standalone PC, running a looped MS PowerPoint Presentation and a randomized, looped Winamp playlist, as a continuity source. This works fine, for the most part. But, I'm looking to see if I can off-load this task onto the server, and free up that always-valuable port in my a/v matrix switch.

From what I've found the 'playlist' option in the Telvue server is pretty much useless -- for so many reasons. The bottom line is that it would mean far more work for me, and it wouldn't do as much as my eight-year-old P4 PC.

Was wondering if anyone had other unique solutions to provide a continuity source from within the server that would allow for a still slideshow without causing too much more trouble.

There are actually a few things that can cause this, and I would also be interested in hearing of other possible causes from the community.

Some causes we have run into over the years:
* Majority of your content is mono, and something downstream is mixing the stereo output of the B100 into mono, effectively mixing a silent channel with the one with audio, and lowering the audio.
* The output of your B100 is unbalanced, and the output of the satellite receiver is balanced audio - in addition to other differences, the dBV of balanced vs unbalanced audio differs with balanced being higher.

Both are fairly easily resolved situations, basically involving wiring in only the channels that include audio, or using converters such as a balanced to unbalanced (or vice-versa) converter. Again, while it will be interesting to hear the feedback of other users, please feel free to open a tech support case (support@telvue.com) if you want our help resolving this issue.

DBarreto, its unfortunately hard to tell without having access to the VIDEO_TS folder itself, to run a few other tools and/or analysis on it to see. If you contact tech support, via support@telvue.com, and open a case, we can take a closer look at that VIDEO_TS file and see what it is.

I would say the two most common problems with DVDs are:
1. They were recorded with a one-touch recorder in "proprietary" mode
2. The DVD media itself got scratched/old/corrupted and/or the transfer was imperfect

But thats just going by what we commonly see, I can't say for sure that is the case here.

In fact, there is a Stop button on the dashboard, but it applies to playout events (playing a file from the hard drives), not switch events. If you have a playout event and switch event going at the same time, and press the Stop button on the dashboard, it is the playout event that stops.

To stop a switch event, go to the Programming tab (classic view), check the checkbox next to the switch event, and select "unschedule" from the actions at the top of the list. With a duration-based switch event, this will switch you back to the channel's homeport.

If the original switch event had no duration (it was a "take"), then just execute a second 0-duration switch back to what ports you want to be on.

VIDEO_RM is a proprietary format used by some one-touch recorders, and is not a standard DVD. DVD Import cannot deal with VIDEO_RM folders, and when a VIDEO_RM folder is present, it means there is not true, standard DVD information in the VIDEO_TS folders.

Most of the recorders we have ever seen that use the VIDEO_RM setup have a way to turn it off. Different makes and models call this feature by different names but usually there is a menu selection where you can select between something like STANDARD and ENHANCED or sometimes STANDARDS MODE or ADVANCED MODE, etc. Whatever it is called, you want to select the the standards mode to create standard-compliant DVDs.

I just checked in with technical support and got some data from the case, and took a direct look at the example file you provided (on your server). Looks like the file appears as High level (with main profile). The stanard def servers need Main level (MP@ML).

Of the settings on the file I can review via this method, there is nothing that should require MP@HL on this file, so that just seems like iMedia is creating an incorrect header. Does iMedia provide control over profile and level directly? If so, is there an option to set it at Main Profile and Main Level?

I have never used iMedia, however to keep your total mux rate under 10.08, you generally need to have video that is 8 Mbps or less. This leaves room for audio and the mux overhead. If your MPEG-2 Video is already 8 Mbps or less, it might be some other setting preventing the file from being importable or playable in the system. If that is the case, you might want to open a tech support case (email support@telvue.com) so someone can give you a hand with the exact error.

Continuity Playlists absolutely do support videos. I am sorry if the manual does not make that clear, I will take a look and correct that error. A Continuity Playlist is a good way to achieve exactly this.

If I want to loop a group of videos in the same order, can I do this with a playlist and not have to schedule every iteration? I have tried setting up Continuity on a blank channel that points to a Continuity playlist of vides, but I just read in the manual that continuity playlists only support images, not video... Is this true? How can I achieve a consistent loop of a group of videos without having to schedule them individually and repetitively?

Problem #2 that westis has listed above turned out to be a setting that was incorrectly activated on his server. This setting, in software versions earlier then 3.10, can be found on the Config tab, in Content Settings, and is called "Check Program Location Conflicts". Its useful when using a single broadcast server with many encode devices such as our C100, but generally not useful otherwise.

Software versions later from 3.10 and later drop this setting altogether since it was rarely used.

With that setting on, and all the TBDs added having the same location, some blocking on perceived conflicts occurred.

The first error seems to be something expected in the workflow between open media and our api, but westis will let me know if that turns out to be an incorrect conclusion and he still has trouble with that error.

That's the beauty of a web-based system like TelVue, you can use any web browser pretty much. I do the same thing with my Palm Pre when we're out at a remote location without WiFi.

Well, the file that I try to create a TBD of doesn't exist. And the file that the error message says exists is another one, and not a file but a TBD that is longer than 1 hour. If the file replaces that other TBD, the error message disappears. And if the TBD is shorter than an hour there is no error.

So something is blocking TBD creation if there is any other TBD that is longer than an hour. I experienced this again today and am therefore not able to schedule any new shows before the TBD in question has a file.

Only one of these is a TelVue error...

2) Failed. Validation failed: Another program exists at the same time at the same location:

Even that isn't really an error, but the response to an attempt to add a show with a filename of an existing show.

This is easy enough to solve by wrapping any call to Get Content Metadata by Filename before calling the AddProgram SOAP method.

Another option would be to parse the TelVue response and display a friendlier message like 'This file already exists'.

From a performance perspective, is there a difference on the TelVue end between doing Get Content Metadata by Filename for every file and only a AddProgram SOAP if the file doesn't already exist or just attempting a AddProgram SOAP for everything and dealing with the 'Another program exists at the same time at the same location' responses?

Excellent. Btw, I think the first error only occurs when there is a file that doesn't exist on the server. Somehow it tries to move it from somewhere.

Hi,

We frequently encounter two kinds of errors from the B100 when inserting TBDs via SOAP through the Drupal Open Media modules.

1) Failed. Unable to move file. Exit code 1.
This we seem to get randomly. Trying again creates the TBD allright. Not sure why it says "Unable to move file", as it's not supposed to move a file, right?

2) Failed. Validation failed: Another program exists at the same time at the same location: NNN999.
It seems like if there is a TBD of a show with a duration longer than approximately one hour, then no other TBD can be inserted until the actual file has replaced the first TBD. How come that long TBDs are blocking the creation of other TBDs?

Cheers!
